Blues defender Antonio Rudiger has revealed that he played a part in convincing Timo Werner to move to Stamford Bridge. Rudiger is a former teammate of Werner at Bundesliga side Stuttgart, and both play together for the German national squad.
Werner’s move was officially announced by Chelsea FC a few days back. The German striker had been initially tipped to join Liverpool FC, but upon Jurgen Klopp withdrawing his interest in signing the RB Leipzig striker, the Blues concluded Werner’s signing in a swift manner.
Speaking after the Blues 2-1 victory against Aston Villa, Rudiger stated that he is very excited about Werner’s impending arrival at Stamford Bridge. The centre-back voiced his admiration for the 24-year old Werner’s development in recent seasons while at Leipzig.
Rudiger noted the similarities in the playing style of Werner and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. The German defender said that both strikers had explosive speed, which allowed them to trouble opposition defences. Moreover, like Vardy, Werner too was an excellent goal scorer.
Speaking on Werner’s move to Chelsea FC, Rudiger voiced his contribution towards the same. The centre back stated that he had been in contact with Werner during the lockdown period. Rudiger had convinced the Leipzig striker to seal a move to Stamford Bridge when Werner had told his Germany teammate that he was interested in playing in the Premier League.
The Blues centre-back also added that while he was at Stuttgart along with Werner, he could see the prospect in the German international. Werner went on became Stuttgart’s youngest goalscorer and a very important player for the German side before signing for fellow Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. Rudiger too departed for Italian giants AS Roma.
The German duo will now team up at Chelsea FC from the 2020-21 campaign. The upcoming season will surely see the Blues challenge for the Premier League title. Frank Lampard has spent a huge amount of money to revitalize the young Chelsea FC squad. The signings of Hakim Ziyech and Werner should bolster the Blues ahead of next season.
