Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has said Chelsea should give Romelu Lukaku another chance when he returns from his loan spell at Inter Milan this summer.
Lukaku endured a miserable return to the Premeir League when he re-signed for the Blues in the summer of 2021 and the Belgium international was shipped out on loan back to Inter last year.
He has struggled for form and fitness in his second stint at San Siro but the striker was on the scoresheet as his side Inter edged past Porto 1-0 in the Champions League last 16 first leg in midweek.
The Belgian’s future with Chelsea, however, has continued to be the subject of much speculation with Inter yet to make an official decision over retaining their on-loan frontman beyond the end of the season when his loan expires.
Speaking to BT Sport ( via The Daily Express), ex-England skipper Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Chelsea should give Lukaku a chance to impress under the new manager Graham Potter with the Blues’ front line failing to impress and looking for a fresh pair of legs.
“If he can get back fit again this guy has proven he is a goalscorer, simple as that.
“New manager, give him a chance. You have got no one in there that you obviously trust at the moment, [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang isn’t even in the European squad, this guy he’s just a goalscorer. Alright, he is not fit, he is carrying a bit more weight than normal or what he or the club would like, still comes in and scores two goals in the last two games.”
