Pochettino Departs Chelsea After Just One Season

Mauricio Pochettino had left by mutual consent following just one season in charge. Chelsea was led by the 52-year-old Argentine manager for 11 months during which they improved from their previous 12th-place finish in the Premier League to sixth place.

Despite obstacles encountered during the season, Pochettino led Chelsea to both the FA Cup semifinals and the Carabao Cup final. After winning five games in a row at the end of the season, the team made sure they would play in Europe next year. Chelsea FC has said that they and Mauricio Pochettino have agreed to split up.

He took over as interim manager in May of the previous year succeeding Frank Lampard who had been brought in after Graham Potter was fired in April 2023 after a protracted hiring process. Mateo Kovacic, NGolo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta were among the notable players who left. Pochettino said he wasn’t sure if Chelsea would hold an end-of-season review to determine his future after the team defeated Bournemouth on the final day of play.

Following discussions on Monday, both parties decided that Pochettino should resign. The sporting directors of Chelsea Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley offered their appreciation saying “Mauricio’s management this season has been greatly appreciated by all of us at Chelsea. We wish him the very best of luck in his future coaching career and will always welcome him back to Stamford Bridge”.

A year before joining Chelsea Pochettino was unemployed. He had led Paris Saint-Germain to win the Ligue 1 title and took Tottenham to the Champion’s League final in 2019. Kieran McKenna from Ipswich, Enzo Maresca from Leicester, Sebastian Hoeness from Stuttgart, and Michel, the boss of Girona, are part of the story.

Pochettino’s contract had one year remaining which presented a problem given Chelsea’s involvement in the Club World Cup in June of next year according to chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol of Sky Sports. Either a new agreement would be reached now or the parties would break up.
