In the modern game, where Chelsea FC have been so successful, the definition of club legend has changed. In recent times, Chelsea have seen the world’s best players grace the pitch at Stamford Bridge.
To become a club legend at Chelsea FC, one has to stay at the club for a long time, win trophies and be one of the world’s best at their position. Modern-day Chelsea FC legends John Terry, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard all tick these boxes. Out of the current squad, some players have all the potential to become a future Chelsea FC legend. Here we’ll list them down.
#1: Cesar Azpilicueta:
Already a club legend in the eyes of some, Cesar Azpilicueta certainly ticks all three boxes. The only thing that goes against his claim to become a legend is his international reputation. The likes of Dani Carvajal and Nacho were always preferred over him in the national set-up restricting the defender to make his name on the national stage.
Azpilicueta, the current club-captain is a solid defender and is often described as the League’s best one on one defender. His ability on the ball and quality has been declining as of late but he is still an important figure in the Chelsea FC backroom. His versatility is a big bonus to the Blues as he fits in comfortably anywhere across the backline, also despite his short stature, he is very strong in the air and rarely allows attackers to get the better of him.
#2: Reece James
Reece James has made his debut for Chelsea FC this season but already looks like a seasoned veteran. Equally comfortable on the right side of the defence and in midfield, James has the ability to whip in quality balls with his right foot. He spent the 18/19 season at Wigan where he was awarded the Player of the Year title, which is even more impressive given that he was on loan.
His leadership skills also make him a strong candidate for the captain’s armband further down the line. Reece James looks like the perfect blend between the more attacking Alexander Arnold and more defensive Aaron Wan Bissaka.
If he keeps playing like the way he is doing now, he is definitely on the way to become a Chelsea FC legend and perhaps one of the best right-backs in the world.
#3: Mason Mount
Another player who made his Chelsea FC debut this season under Lampard, Mount has been the creative force for Chelsea FC this season. The 20-year-old spent the 18/19 season with Lampard at Derby where he was very influential in the club’s journey to the Playoff final where they narrowly lost out to Aston Villa.
Mount has scored six League goals and has provided four assists so far in his debut campaign, a statistic that very few had achieved at his tender age.
The young midfielder has endless stamina and is a vital cog in Lampard’s system which requires relentless pressing. Mount is equally comfortable on the left-wing and in the #8 position.
Mount’s durability has also come in handy in an injury-hit campaign for Chelsea FC as the midfielder looks set to follow in the footsteps of his manager.
Mount looked set to hit the heights in world football, as he was declared a prodigy when he was at Vitesse. Mount’s strong mentality has often been lauded by all his managers and the midfielder is only going to become better.
#4: Tammy Abraham
Tammy Abraham was brilliant at youth level and was on the verge of breaking through under Conte and Sarri.
However, he was sent on loan every season. Abraham was also exquisite in the Championship where he spent two seasons, one with Bristol City and one with Aston Villa in the 18-19 season. Sandwiched between these two seasons was a loan at Swansea City in the Premier League. This season was injury-hit for Abraham and he only managed to score five goals with most of his appearances coming from the bench. He scored 23 goals at Bristol City and 25 goals for Aston Villa, leading them to promotion.
He had a brilliant start at the club, scoring braces against both Norwich and Sheffield. He also scored a hat-trick against Wolves in a 5-2 win which made him the youngest to do so for Chelsea FC, a feat since overtaken by Pulisic.
#5: Callum Hudson-Odoi
Hudson Odoi is a talented winger who is equally adept on both sides of the attack. He started his career in the left wing position but given Eden Hazard was occupying that spot, he was given the right-wing when he broke onto the Chelsea FC scene under Maurizio Sarri.
He was declared as a generational talent by many after seeing his performances at the youth level. However, he was neglected by Sarri for the first team, much to the surprise of everyone. Robert Green in a recent interview stated that Hudson Odoi was able to dribble past everyone in training but Sarri refused to give him a chance. Bayern made a bid of around 30 million for him but Chelsea FC were trying to hang on as the winger looked set to run down his contract which was supposed to end in 2020.
Given the pressure, Sarri was forced to play him. People were confused as to why Sarri was not playing him before after seeing his performances on the senior level. He suffered an Achilles injury in April which forced him out of the Europa League final, a competition that he had done particularly well that season.
The arrival of Lampard saw many youngsters break onto the scene and Hudson Odoi was convinced that he would be given the chances to reach his potential at Chelsea FC. Since his recovery, he has shown his talent in bits and pieces but his ability on the ball in unquestionable. He has the ability to go past anyone and control the game in a manner \ that only a few can.
