Ben Chilwell from Leicester City has been signed by Chelsea for a fee of 50 million. The club desperately needed reinforcement at the left-back area. Since Ashley Cole, they didn’t have a solid left-back.
But it doesn’t mean that others have been bad. It’s just that they couldn’t show similar promise. While Chilwell has been very promising in attacking and defending as well. No wonder, Frank Lampard was trying to get him in Stamford Bridge. He has produced some great assists lately as well as scored in his debut match. He is a very hard-working fullback who crosses from the left flank.
Previously on international duty, Chilwell got substituted for England in a 2-0 defeat to Belgium. The Englishman claimed to have a back problem which led him in being substituted. He was not comfortable while walking as well.
The duration of his injury is not known yet. Maybe he would not be able to play for Chelsea’s next game against Newcastle. In the next Premier League fixture, Blues will travel to St. James Park.
The safe option for Frank Lampard
In the past few years, César Azpilicueta has been proved very reliable for Chelsea. Still, in the starting line up Recce, James is ahead of him. This season, he was able to make only eight appearances for the club in all the competitions.
The Spaniard has served Chelsea in a variety of roles. Across the years, he has played as a wing-back, centre-back, right-back, etc. Also, he has played under Jose Mourinho as a left-back. So, it shouldn’t be surprising at all if he starts playing against Newcastle.
The former Marseille defender has done his job amazingly as a left-back under Mourinho. In the next game, he will be a very safe option for Frank Lampard. Maybe he wouldn’t be able to contribute the attacking prowess like Chilwell but he could be strong at the back for sure.
In a few previous games, Chelsea has improved in defending very massively. If Frank Lampard wants this trend to be continued then his first choice should be Azpilicueta. Also, Spaniard is well experienced as well.
The other two options for Frank Lampard
This Summer, Marcos Alonso or Emerson Palmieri was expected to leave Chelsea. Both of them hardly had any game time as Chelsea continues to give its best. For Italy, Emerson is regular and the same case is not with Alonso.
If we see currently then we will notice that Emerson seems to be ahead of Alonso. Frank Lampard has lost his patience with him as he continues to be a defensive liability. He was angry with him in the 3-3 draw against West Brom.
At half time, the former Bolton defender was substituted. At the beginning of Lampard’s rule as Chelsea’s manager, Emerson was ahead of Alonso. However, he has suffered from an injury and since then he didn’t recover his position.
There is a possibility that if Lampard does not pick Azpilicueta then he will go for Emerson. Also, the former Roma left-back has well-matched in terms of fitness. Previously, he has played in Italy’s game against Poland during the International break.
