Pundit Paul Merson says he is unimpressed by Chelsea’s interest in Raheem Sterling with the England international linked with a Stamford Bridge switch this summer.
The Manchester City winger has found it tough to cement a berth in the first XI for the newly crowned champions of England and could be set to seek a new destination ahead of the start of the next campaign.
With rumours doing the rounds of the Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel set to be handed £200 million to spend this summer by the new owners, Sterling’s name has emerged on the radar at the Bridge.
Tuchel’s well-stacked attacking roster, which has the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Christian Pulisic, failed to provide the much-needed firepower in the final third and could force Tuchel to dip into the market again for a fresh face.
But Paul Merson is of the opinion while speaking to The Daily Star that Chelsea would be better off looking for a new defensive signing this summer rather than keep tabs on Sterling who is unlikely to prove to be a good price of business for the Blues.
“Chelsea need a big summer of signings and they might not get that.
“They need at least a couple of defenders because Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are leaving, and they might not be the only ones leaving either.
“But they are stuck with Romelu Lukaku. They won’t be able to sell him without making a loss, and who could they get to replace him? Top-class centre forwards are scarce.
“They might go for Raheem Sterling but he plays the Manchester City way. I don’t think Raheem Sterling scores 20 goals a season for Chelsea.”
