Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has revealed that Chelsea needs to purchase a new striker in the January transfer market.
Chelsea is currently going great guns in the Premier League as the Blues are still undefeated this term. New head coach Maurizio Sarri has transformed the club and instilled his philosophy into the Chelsea squad and the club is reaping the benefits of beautiful football. Even struggling striker Alvaro Morata has been finding the back of the net over the recent past after his struggles in his debut season in England.
The Spaniard was an absolute horror show last term when injuries and poor form hampered his Chelsea career. Morata was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer after just one failed season at West London. The 26-year-old is now finally starting to take some of his chances but still failed to convert his brace into a hat-trick against Crystal Palace as he squandered a late chance.
And ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson believes that Sarri needs to look at a goalscorer in the winter transfer window to win some silverware.
While speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports the 50-year-old former Englishman revealed that Chelsea have a strong team but they just need someone who can finish off those chances that are created, “Chelsea put out a strong team at BATE Borisov, perhaps it was too strong, I understand Eden Hazard needs the minutes but surely you’d rather him have them against Everton rather than traveling all the way to Belarus.
Chelsea has a decent squad and will be there or thereabouts this season, but they still need a proper goalscorer. You only need to look at Alvaro Morata’s late chance against Palace. Yes, the game was won, but Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Thierry Henry, Harry Kane and the like would have sealed their hat-trick instead of trying to chip the goalkeeper, got the ball signed by everyone and then gone home”
All strikers miss chances and I think that Merson is slightly harsh on Morata but there is a point where Chelsea needs to understand that all they require are a goalscorer. But at the moment, things are going well for them and Sarri wouldn’t want to change the style of play after Morata is finding his feet.
Chelsea takes on Merseyside club Everton on Sunday hoping to keep up their unbeaten run in the Premiership.
