Chelsea moved to the top of the Premier League table with their 3-1 victory against Leeds United at Stamford Bridge, set on their way by a fifth goal in four days from striker Olivier Giroud.
It was the old reliable players of last season who steered Frank Lampard’s side to the top of the Premier League temporarily amongst the £220 million worth of summer signings who started against Leeds United.
Olivier Giroud and Kurt Zouma’s goals either side of half-time and a late Christian Pulisic tap-in earned them a 3-1 victory over Marcelo Bielsa’s energetic Leeds. Each one of the six new faces of the Blues started on this Baltic evening in West London, but it was their unsung heroes were on the scoresheet for Chelsea.
The first of those chances were taken, almost inevitably it seems given the run of form he is in this week, by Olivier Giroud.
‘His performance was great, off the back of the Seville performance,’ praised the Blues’ manager as per Chelsea Official website.
‘He’s a reference for us as a front man, and when balls come into the area he has the ability to be cool and clinical with his finishing, although to be fair he might have had two or three more goals today.
People will always question me about who I play up front because I have options. When Oli is there I know I can rely on him and today he was huge.’
The 34-year-old Olivier Giroud got his rare start of the Premier League match as he scored four goals in the UCL in the previous match against Sevilla.
After trailing by a goal, the french man turned in a whipped cross by Reece James in the 27th minute for an equalizer. The lack of minutes this season has however compelled Diddier Deschamps to urge Giroud to take an exit from the club.
The France coach clearly indicated to seek a move to a different club if the situation doesn’t get resolved in order to be in Euro 2021.
