Welsh defender Ethan Ampadu has officially made the move to Red Bull Leipzig on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Chelsea for the upcoming 2019/20 season.
Ampadu joined Chelsea from Exeter back in 2017 and there was a lot of hype surrounding the teenager when he arrived at Stamford Bridge. However, in just over a year, Ampadu broke into the first-team squad after impressive displays under former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri. The 60 years old Italian trusted his faith in the young defender and gave Ampadu five first-team appearances across all competitions last term.
But following the appointment of former England manager Frank Lampard at Chelsea this summer, there are plenty of options for the 41-year-old to pick from as the Blues endured a transfer ban. Lampard has recalled a lot of players that Chelsea sent out on loan and Ampadu wasn’t able to make the cut to remain at Stamford Bridge for the next season.
As a result of the overload of players at Chelsea, Lampard has decided to send Ampadu out on loan to improve and get regular football at Red Bull Leipzig. The German club snapped up the versatile defender yesterday and announced Ampadu as their official player on the club’s website.
Upon making his move to the Bundesliga, the 18-year-old star spoke to Leipzig’s official website to state his feelings of delight, “I am very happy to be at RB Leipzig and start the season with the team. I want to get to know the team as quickly as possible and integrate myself. I’ve been following the club in recent years and saw how fantastic young players have come to develop here and what potential there is in this club. So it’s the perfect step for me.”
