Premier League side Arsenal has officially completed the signing of Brazilian central defender David Luiz on a two-year deal just before the transfer deadline day by agreeing on an £8 million deal with Chelsea.
Luiz first joined Chelsea back in January 2011 when he arrived from Portuguese club Benfica to Stamford Bridge and his full debut season was one to remember as Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League in the most dramatic fashion. The following season, Luiz helped the Blues to win the Europa League and he became quite a popular figure at the West London club.
In June 2014, Luiz became the most expensive defender at the time at £50 million when he joined Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain winning all four domestic trophies in both seasons at the Parc Des Princes. Two years later Luiz returned to Chelsea in a £30 million deal and helped the West Londoners to the Premier League title became a solid figure in Antonio Conte’s defensive backline.
The next season, Luiz won the FA Cup and this summer he helped the Blues to win the Europa League by beating Arsenal in the final of the competition as well as aiding Chelsea to a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Across two spells with Chelsea, Luiz spent seven seasons at the club winning six major honors but off late, the 32-year-old somewhat lost his place in the starting eleven to Antonio Rudiger and therefore decided to make a move to local rivals Arsenal to play under Unai Emery at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal confirmed the signing of Luiz on their official website and expressed his wealth and experience along with his jersey number, “Brazilian international defender David Luiz has signed for us in a permanent transfer from Chelsea. The 32-year-old center-back has a wealth of experience and has made 524 club appearances in a career spanning 13 seasons. David will wear the number 23 shirt.”
