English center back Gary Cahill has officially made the move to South London club Crystal Palace after being released by Chelsea earlier this summer transfer window.
Cahill spent seven fruitful years at Chelsea following his arrival at Stamford Bridge back in 2012 from Bolton Wanderers in a £7 million deal. The central defender enjoyed a great run with the Blues helping them to win the Champions League in his debut season with the West Londoners.
The 33-year-old defender became a regular starter at Chelsea and soon was a mainstay at the heart of the defense for the Blues. Cahill also won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, One League Cup, and One Europa League over the next few years adding quite a bit of gloss to his CV.
However, Cahill managed to make only two Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season and the club did not offer him an extension on his deal which expired in the summer which meant that he was released earlier this summer from Chelsea. There were still a number clubs interested in his services and Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace has won that race by luring him at Selhurst Park on a free transfer.
Cahill signed a two year contract with Crystal Palace which will see him earn around £75,000 a week and the former England defender explained that he is keen and excited to start this new challenge in his football career under Roy Hodgson, “I’m glad to be here, I think it’s a good opportunity for me to continue my career in the Premier League, and to play in a good, exciting team. There are some very exciting, talented players here. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
