The visitors were forced into an early change from the bench with Ruben Loftus-Cheek limping off the pitch as the veteran Thiago Silva came on to replace the Englishman.
Miguel Almiron had the first real chance of the game but his effort went flying over the crossbar while Chelsea struggled to make the most of their attacking opportunities on the other end of the pitch.
Broja’s strike after being teed up by Mason Mount called Newcastle goalie Nick Pope into a rather routine stop with both teams heading into the interval with the score at nil-nil.
The home side came back out from the break brightest and had chances through on goal but Chelsea’s midfielder Conor Gallagher had Pope making a fine stop to deny his England colleague.
With a quarter of the contest left to play, Newcastle were the one who broke the deadlock through Willock who slotted the ball past Mendy into the corner of the net.
Chelsea’s response was a triple change to freshen up their ranks but efforts by Graham Potter’s men fell short with the Newcastle backline putting up a resilient display to seal the win.
