The visitors enjoyed a greater share of the possession but were unable to capitalise on the goalscoring front with Newcastle United defending deep.

Hakim Ziyech went close with his efforts but Thomas Tuchel’s men were largely kept in check from the hosts who put together a rugged display on the defensive end of the pitch.

Both sides went into the half-time break with the score at nil-nil as Chelsea were left frustrated on not having a deserved advantage heading into the second period of the match.

Ziyech and Havertz sought to give Chelsea the edge when going forward but the attacking duo were denied by Newcastle goalie Darlow who was called into action much more than had been expected of him in the opening minutes of the second half.

Tuchel rang in changes from his bench and Chelsea soon gained ground with Reece James the man to thank for his spectacular strike giving putting the Blues ahead.

The full-back was again on target after Ruben Loftus-Cheek had his effort blocked which fell to James who made no mistake in dispatching it past Darlow to make it 2-0 for Chelsea.

Chelsea added a third from the spot with Jorginho at his usual best after Havertz was brought down in the box by Darlow and the third and final goal for the visitors wrapped up the game to ensure another convincing win for Tuchel and Co.
