Chelsea’s new goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy will play against his former French club, Rennes in the Champions League group stage clash on Wednesday and Lampard is delighted seeing the Senegalese keeper doing it soo brilliantly since he move to the Tamfrod Bridge over five weeks ago.
The Chelsea coach claims that Edouard Mendy has given the Blues the security they were in dire need of between the sticks. The £22million signing has just conceded one goal so far in his six appearances compared to the Spaniard, Kepa Arrizabalaga’s 14 in the last six matches.
“Edouard has come in from the first game he played, against Tottenham in the League Cup, and shown he can give us the security we’re striving for,” said Blues boss Lampard as quoted by Mirror news.
“We brought him in for the competition and it’s up to the players then to show their own qualities. He’s shown them, but it’s not just him.“I think we’re working on the discipline of the team, defending the box, he’s been a constant for us.
“I think we have to give credit to individuals within the collective and he’s done really well. I’m so pleased with the way he’s started.
“His personality again, when you sign players and bring them into the group, you want to see how they are because you never quite know until they’re in the building and he’s settled in really well.
Lampard says that his new keeper has a very good personality and engages with his teammates. He trains very well and makes good relationships with people, says the coach. He is very hopeful that he will become a great player for the Blues.
Meanwhile, this situation has left the No.1 keeper of Chelsea, Kepa under an uncertain future and things may go bad for his career even.
The Spanish international is currently recovering from a shoulder injury that he got and was out of the first XI from Chelsea’s previous matches. The current form of Mendy will surely bench Kepa in the following games and getting back to the first team will be hell of a task for him.
