Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has come to the aid of misfiring striker Alvaro Morata stating that his career at Stamford Bridge is not yet finished.
The Blues became the first team to hand Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City their first loss of the current Premier League season as Chelsea scored twice past City keeper Ederson Moraes to take three points and move into fourth place on the table. However, there was a shocking team selection made by Maurizio Sarri as the Italian boss decided to completely omit striker Alvaro Morata from his squad and used Belgian winger Eden Hazard as a makeshift centre-forward.
The Spaniard’s last two starts came during away defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers but Morata was subbed off before 65 minutes for either of the two games.
Ever since arriving at West London back in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee of £58 million, has not made a positive impact on Chelsea as he has shown his struggles at adapting to life in the Premier League.
However, Sarri spoke to reporters and stated that he dropped Morata mainly because of the opposition and that no decisions have been made on the striker’s future at the club, “I think it is normal, it was a choice for this kind of match. I don’t know if in Brighton we will play in the same way or not, maybe not. I don’t know. I think Alvaro is able to understand that it is only a tactical decision; it is not the final choice. We thought yesterday that for the first time in the season that there was a possibility to have more spaces – so we wanted to try with Eden – because for the first time there was a possibility to play on the counter-attack.”
Morata was left out of the Chelsea squad for the first time this season against Manchester City and he is yet to win over the fans of the Chelsea faithful. Sarri is showing faith in his striker but Morata now really needs to step up his game and prove his worth to the club.
