Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is determined to offload all the club’s unwanted players to achieve a more balanced squad.
Despite already approving several departures during the early stages of the summer transfer window, the team has still chosen a roster of 29 players for their tour in the United States.
Pochettino remains committed to trimming the squad further to create the desired equilibrium within the team.
The Argentine manager’s traveling squad for Chelsea’s tour in the United States does not include Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, and Callum Hudson-Odoi, as the club is actively trying to find new clubs for them.
Following Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Pochettino emphasized the importance of reducing the size of the squad. The manager is keen on streamlining the team to achieve better balance and efficiency.
As per the Athletic, he said:
“First of all we need to define the squad. We are 29, 30 players here, and it’s massive. At the moment the dynamic is really good. They are very good guys sharing a good time together.”
“But it’s difficult because in every game maybe three, four, five players cannot play, and that makes the mood difficult. It’s about creating a squad with a good balance with people who have the opportunity to play and compete for a place.”
“That is a challenge for us in the transfer window to build a good balance, and then if players are not happy because they believe they are not going to play, we will find a solution to fix the situation.”
The manager is concerned that the large and growing squad at Chelsea could have negative consequences for both the club and the players.
He is making a strong effort to communicate his decision to offload more unsettled players as he believes it is essential to avoid any potential damage to the team’s dynamics and performance.
