Marco van Ginkel signs one-year contract extension at Chelsea FC

Marco van Ginkel has signed extended his stay at Chelsea FC after signing a one-year contract extension with them. The midfielder has struggled with injury troubles since signing for the Blues seven years ago in 2013 from Vitesse.

The 27-year old Dutch international has been shipped off on consecutive loan spells over the past few seasons by Chelsea FC. Van Ginkel has played for AC Milan, Stoke City, and PSV during his time away from Stamford Bridge.

Constant injury troubles have curtailed the midfielder’s progress at Chelsea FC. Van Ginkel has spent considerable time on the sidelines due to such issues.

However, the 27-year old did impress during his loan stint at Eredivisie side PSV. The player scored eight goals in 16 appearances for the Dutch side and played an important role in them being crowned the league champions. Moreover, for his spectacular performances, Van Ginkel was able to earn a call from the Dutch national team.

Injuries shortly blighted his time on the pitch again in the form of a knee operation in July 2018. Van Ginkel has not made a professional appearance since then. However, he did report back to training sessions before the lockdown period was imposed in the United Kingdom.

Frank Lampard does harbour hopes from the 27-year old Van Ginkel. His faith in the Dutch midfielder explains the extension of his expiring contract by one more year in the Blues shirt.

Van Ginkel also has spoken about his desire of proving himself worthy of being included in the Chelsea FC squad. The player had admitted to his agent being in talks with the Chelsea FC management regarding extension of his contract at the Premier League side.

Former PSV manager Peter Bosz had hailed the ability of the then promising Van Ginkel. Moreover, Bosz had dubbed the player to be the ‘next Frank Lampard’. However, injuries have affected Van Ginkel’s playing career so far and haven’t let him realize his potential.

The player will be optimistic about making the most of the opportunity handed out to him. Van Ginkel would be hoping to repay Lampard’s faith shown in him by playing well next season for the Blues.
