Chelsea were sent crashing out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night with Manchester City winning the midweek contest 2-0 at the Etihad.
MATCH PROCEEDINGS
The game was off to a slow start before Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic’s strike called City goalie Stefan Ortega Moreno into action to make a good stop.
Julian Alvarez was then denied by Chelsea’s man between the sticks in Edouard Mendy while City playmaker Jack Grealish could not find the back of the net from distance.
Ortega was again present to keep out Pulisic’s effort from ensuring Chelsea took the lead heading into the interval with both teams evenly poised for the opener which was to arrive in the second period.
Grealish tested Mendy twice in quick succession with the latter saving both efforts, however, was helpless when Chelsea conceded a free kick which was taken by Mahrez.
The Algerian attacker curled his free kick, taking a touch off Broja in the process, and went past Mendy into the back of the net to break the deadlock.
Mahrez came close to doubling his tally and after drawing a save from Mendy, the ball could only reach Alvarez who slotted it to make it 2-0 for the home side and clinch the win.
