With Leicester City refusing to budge on their £75 million price-tag for Ben Chilwell, Chelsea FC have turned their eyes to Everton FC left-back Lucas Digne. The Frenchman has also been on Pep Guardiola’s transfer shortlist ahead of next season’s start.
Frank Lampard has prioritized the signing of Chilwell in recent weeks, however, has been continued to be priced out of a deal for the English international. As a result, the Blues coach has identified cheaper alternatives for the left back position in the Chelsea FC squad. Alex Telles and Nicolas Tagliafico had emerged as Lampard’s probable alternatives earlier.
The 26-year old Digne has been a solid performer for Everton FC since joining them in 2018. The Frenchman replaced Leighton Baines as the first-choice Toffees’ left-back with his incredible run of form. Digne has developed into one of the most talented full-backs playing in the Premier League currently.
Lampard feels that Digne could be a perfect addition to the Blues first-team. The player has past experience of playing for a top team with Digne having turned out for Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona earlier in his career. Moreover, the 26-year old has plenty of international experience as well, with Digne having played for the French national team on more than 30 occasions.
Chelsea FC’s current left-back’s Marcos Alonso and Emerson have not impressed Frank Lampard. The Chelsea FC manager is believed to have been unhappy with the full-back’s inconsistency of form. As a result, both Alonso and Emerson could be sold by the Blues in the transfer window.
Emerson is being courted by Inter Milan and Lampard would not be worried about losing the player to the Serie A giants. Earlier reports had suggested that Newcastle United FC had declared their interest in signing the Spanish international Marcos Alonso in the summer.
Digne’s transfer would cost the Blues a significant amount of money. The left-back still has three years to go on his existing Everton FC contract. However, signing the French left-back would be much cheaper for Lampard than to peruse the transfer of Ben Chilwell.
