Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has admitted that his side needs to work on their fitness following the 1-1 draw against Bohemians in the preseason as the first game in charge of the club.
Michy Batshuayi’s early goal was unfortunately canceled out by Eric Molloy’s late equalizer just one minute from the full-time whistle as Lampard got his first taste of what it’s like to manage Chelsea.
The Blues got into their groove early on in the game and dominated for most parts until a late but Lampard admitted that he needs his players to work on their fitness post the game. After leaving his post as manager of Derby County, Lampard spoke in his first interview after a Chelsea manager.
Because of the preseason, some players still have to work on getting back into shape and the 41-year-old stressed that to prepare for the whole season his players need to work harder, “Fitness was our issue; we’ve been working hard on it, even this morning. Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that’s halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit. The quicker we get there the better. It’s about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good. We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.”
However, towards the end of the conference, Lampard said that he enjoyed his support so far and is pleased with the attitude of his players so far, “I’ve enjoyed it, we’ve got great support over here. It was a tough game for us, we’ve only been here for a few days. But I’m pleased with how we got on,”
