Chelsea has made great improvements in a variety of areas over a previous couple of weeks. The players in Blues have clicked in the upfront together as well as fixed their defensive inconsistencies after thorough drills and the presence of quality players.
Although the confident approach from one region, that, is the set-pieces have stood out and been a weak link. That is the only reason why Chelsea conceded the goal in just 10 minutes of the match against Sheffield United on Saturday to everyone’s surprise.
David McGoldrick’s goal made the Blues trail down by one goal but was soon equalized by Tammy Abraham through the first half. Ben Chilwell then scored from the delivery of Hakim Ziyech’s corner while Thiago Silva increased the lead with a header. Later on, Timo Werner scored the fourth to put the cherry on the cake.
‘It is something we have worked on and last season we weren’t happy that we conceded too many goals from set-pieces,’ Frank Lampard said in Chelsea’s Official website.
‘They are a crucial part of the modern game, they probably always have been but seemingly so now with blocks and plans to score or to stop you scoring. We looked at it over the course of the off-season and the personnel have certainly helped.
“We are bigger, we are more aggressive naturally through the personnel who have been in the team through the early part of the season. The lads have shown focus in the work we want to do with them on the training pitch, and we are spending enough time on that, but the players have to act on that.
“There is a nice mentality about trying to be as good as we can be at it, which shows you how important set-pieces are because they make the game comfortable.”
The Senegalese keeper of Chelsea, Edouard Mendy had one nervy moment as he jumped to catch a ball from a set-piece that got past everyone, fortunately.
The dead-ball game of Frank Lampard’s side at both ends of the ground has been identified as an area that requires to be improved and that although is in the process after seeing Chelsea’s form over the last weeks.
