Chelsea coach, Frank Lampard clarified what his team’s striker, Timo Werner said in the interview prior to the game against West Ham United. Chelsea defeated them 3-0 courtesy of the goals scored by Thiago Silva and a brace from Tammy Abraham.
Timo Werner again failed to put his name in the scoresheet and questions were raised on his off-form and his prior comments to Lampard. Werner said before the West Ham game that he is struggling to adapt to the new league and he found the English League to be tougher than what he expected.
The English media didn’t take it in the right context and it interpreted as Werner has underestimated the Premier League. Lampard was asked on this and he clearly mentioned what Werner meant and what it has been interpreted.
‘Honesty is a good thing, but whether it gets taken in the right context I’m not always sure,’ said Lampard as per the Chelsea’s Official website.
‘We crave honesty and then we sometimes hang on every word. I don’t think underestimating is quite the right word for him or translation of what he feels. I know he wanted to come here and be a success and I know he understood the rigors of the Premier League. It’s just a fact when you’re here in action there are different challenges.
‘I talk to him all the time,’ added Lampard. ‘I don’t sense his frustration. Clearly, as a striker, you want to be scoring regularly because you get judged and that’s what he’s done in his career, but at the same time every striker has patches where the ball doesn’t drop to you for whatever reason.
‘The positive thing is he is getting chances in games, using his attributes to get in the box and get chances, so they will come.’
The coach was very protective and shielded Werner from all the negativity and criticisms. He is assured that the goals will come as he is getting into the right places at the right time. He is confident in his striker and has faith in him.
Werner has been on a goal drought for a number of matches and Chelsea icon, Joe Cole has even asked the coach to bench him so that he could get a fresh start after some rest. It is yet to see what the Blues’ manager does and how he deals with the situation to get the best out of Werner as clearly, he is a highly talented young man,
