Ex-England international Matthew Upson has launched a scathing remark on Chelsea center-back Kurt Zouma claiming that he is not good enough to play for the west London outfit due to his mistakes and lack of game awareness.
The Blues have had quite an underwhelming season so far under new boss Frank Lampard as Chelsea managed to win only one game, draw two and lose one match as well acquiring four points out of a possible 12 so far. Chelsea wasn’t even able to make any transfers in the summer because of the imposed transfer ban and Lampard was stuck in a difficult spot.
The West London club also decided to sell Brazilian center-back David Luiz to local rivals Arsenal but that decision seems to have backfired at the moment as Chelsea look weak as ever in their backline. Kurt Zouma has been given the opportunity to nail down a starting berth for Lampard’s Chelsea but the Frenchman has been making too many mistakes off late.
The 24-year-old Zouma spent last two seasons on loan with Stoke City and Everton respectively but he does not seem to be learning from his mistakes. Chelsea has the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League till date at the moment only behind newly promoted Norwich City.
And Zouma has been heavily criticized by former Arsenal defender Matthew Upson as the 40-year-old said that he has not been convinced by the Chelsea center-back, “Defensively I’m really not sold, I think Zouma is a problem, I’ve yet to see him play for Chelsea and really feel like he’s capable at that level. I think he makes mistakes, he switches off, his awareness in the box, especially when the ball is wide, are questionable. And set-pieces they seem to be really struggling with.”
