Former Liverpool star Phil Thompson has stated that Chelsea midfielder N’golo Kante is the best holding midfielder in the English Premier League.
Kante arrived at Chelsea back in the summer of 2016 after winning the Premier League with Leicester City and the midfielder won the title with Chelsea in his debut campaign as well. The World Cup-winning French midfielder was played out of position last season by former Blues coach Maurizio Sarri but Kante has got his regular place back under Frank Lampard.
Although Kante is currently injured and has a few issues that he is struggling with, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is hopeful that he can recover soon. The West London outfit welcome Champions League winners Liverpool on Sunday at Stamford Bridge and the Blues will be hoping to be the first club to end Liverpool’s 100 percent win streak this season.
Ahead of the game, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson was asked to pick his combined eleven for Liverpool and Chelsea and the 65-year-old Englishman explained that Kante has to be in there because he is the best player in the defensive midfield position.
While speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson said, “I would have a holding midfielder and that would be N’Golo Kante. He may have had a few injury problems but you do not get much better than him. Fernandinho is up there with him too. Kante did not really play as a holding midfielder for Chelsea under Maurizio Sarri, but we take it for granted just how good he is in that position – he is the best holding midfielder in the league.”
