Chelsea’s Kai Havertz has urged his fellow teammates to take the responsibility for slipping important three points in Saturday’s frustrating 3-3 draw against Southampton in the Premier League.
The German winger scored his first league goal for Chelsea but that wasn’t sufficient enough to win the game. Jannik Vestergaard’s added-time goal forced a draw at Stamford Bridge.
Havertz too admitted that he was responsible for the first goal of Southampton as he lost possession to Danny Ings who finished smartly to change the game eventually.
Chelsea was on a 2-0 lead in the first 30 minutes and looked confident enough after Timo Werner’s fine brace, but Ings’ fourth league goal of the new season that came just before the first half started all the drama.
Che Adams equalized for Saints after a defensive misunderstanding that caused an error between Kepa Arrizabalaga and Kurt Zouma. But it was just seconds when Havertz gave the Blues a lead again in the second half.
For a while, it looked like the third goal scored by Havertz will eventually seal the victory for Chelsea and would be enough to secure the points for Lampard’s team but that didn’t happen.
“We’re very frustrated about the result,” Havertz told Chelsea’s official club website.
We had 42 good minutes in the first half but then I made a mistake and we conceded a goal, which changed the game a little bit.
“We got it to 3-2 and then we had to take the result and get the win at home but we didn’t do it. Now we have to stick together and hopefully, we can do better next time.
“We have to take responsibility for that. We’ve 11 players on the pitch and everybody has to work hard so we don’t concede goals like this. It’s not always one person who makes the mistake so we have to look at our mistakes and try to solve the problems.
“It would have been great if my goal was the winner. Of course, I’m happy with that but very frustrated too about the result. We had to take these three points at home and we can do that so it was a bad day for us.”
It was the second time that Frank Lampard’s side conceded three goals this campaign and Havertz called for taking responsibilities as a whole. He asks to address each individual to those issues that are occurring.
But he knows that the team is new and with more time, the team will gel together and the performance will improve. Though he also conceded that more time together on the training pitch would be essential for working on that.
