When we talk about winning a game, what do we need? A striker who can shuffle around the opposition back line or a agile and hefty defender who can dodge incoming threat towards his goal. No doubt both are fairly weighted but to support and strengthen the team you need a midfielder who is able to squeeze the ball past the opponents in to his own man or create chances with his enigmatic passes.
Midfield is the pivotal edge for any football team, either you’ll prosper with a strong centre player or will perish with a weak link between striker and midfielder. Chelsea have created a story of their own, bluffing one and all with a perfect start to their season.
Two Italians have had a major role in Chelsea’s success. One is our very own Boss Maurizio and the other being his favourite whom he brought from Napoli, Jorginho. The midfielder has been impressive from the start courtesy of his accuracy and ability to create passes.
Don’t be surprised if you hear it for the first time, the Italian midfielder has broken all previous records for total number of attempted passes after surpassing Gundogan of Manchester City. The City player held the record with 174 passes in a premier league game last season which took just 6 games off the boots of Jorginho to exceed the number with 6 passes and make a record of 180 attempted passes.
In his third game, the Italian already daunted records with just 1 pass less from Gundogan. We could see the record coming but the Italian would do it so early was not to be expected.
An incredible 180 passes were met with disciplined defence of West Ham that stopped the Blues from scoring. Despite those stats, Chelsea had to go into the dressing room with a bit of frustration with just 6 shots on target.
Record breaker Jorginho will be happy with his record on the books and also a bit gloomy to have lost two important points in the London Derby.
