Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has questioned the quality of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arizzabalaga after the Blues lost to Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
Chelsea’s unbeaten run this season came to an astonishing end as London rivals Tottenham Hotspur handed Maurizio Sarri his first defeat in English football. The North London giants put Chelsea to the sword at Wembley after a crushing 3-1 victory to move 3rd on the table and send Chelsea fourth.
However, one player looked below average after coming under the scrutiny of the Chelsea faithful in the form of Kepa Arizzabalaga. The Spanish goalkeeper arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer for a record price tag from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao and made himself as a fan favorite.
But the 24-year-old came under fire from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher as the Englishman slated Kepa’s performance after succumbing to pressure against a rampant Tottenham attack on Saturday. Carragher went on to compare Thibaut Courtois’ presence between the sticks and added that Chelsea is weaker without the Belgian, who left for Real Madrid in the summer.
While speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, the 40 year old former Liverpool defender criticized Kepa for Spurs’ opening goal as Dele Alli’s glancing header gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side the lead,” If I’m being honest I think Courtois saves that, I don’t want to keep coming back because he’s a new ‘keeper, a young ‘keeper, but I think in the past that’s saved by Courtois.”
Kepa was then rooted to the spot after Harry Kane’s long-range effort doubled Tottenham’s lead in the first half. A solo run from South Korean forward Heung Min Son rounded off the points and the victory for Spurs and despite the popularity of the Spanish keeper Kepa at his new club, Carragher stated that he was at fault for Chelsea’s downfall.
