Jamie Carragher expects Chelsea to sack Graham Potter despite Dortmund win

Jamie Carragher expects Chelsea to sack Graham Potter despite the win over Borussia Dortmund which assured the Blues of a quarter-final berth in the Champions League.

Despite suggestions that Potter could have earned a lifeline at Stamford Bridge with the Chelsea board likely to retain the former Brighton manager as their person in the Chelsea dugout, Jamie Carragher remains unsure over Potter’s future with the Blues.

Speaking to CBS Sport ( via The Express), Liverpool icon Carragher claimed that he does not expect Potter to still be in charge of Chelsea next season but the latter could be the head coach until the end of this campaign.

“The fans aren’t going to change after one game but I think this gives him time to get them on board.

“He’s going to be there until the end of the season now. There were questions a few days ago as journalists were getting fed information from the club that he could be on a knife-edge.

“He’s won both games and that will be massive for him. Once you get to the Champions League quarter-finals, you’re almost at the end of the season so they’re not going to change it.

“They’re not going to make the top four in terms of league position but [the Champions League] could be the way they make it. They have got great pedigree when you think of the history they’ve got in European competition. That cements [Potter] until the end of the season, but whether he’s there next season or not? I still don’t think he will be.”

Potter has steered his side to two important wins of late –  a league victory over Leeds United and Tuesday night’s 2-0 result at home to Dortmund to ensure Chelsea progressed to the last eight of Europe’s elite club competition.

Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz were on the scoresheet for Chelsea against their German opponents who failed to make the most of their 1-0 win from the first leg to advance to the next round.
