Inter Milan rekindle interest in signing Olivier Giroud

Inter Milan are reportedly preparing an offer worth €5 million for Blues striker Olivier Giroud after being previously linked with the Frenchman. The Serie A giants had previously declared interest in signing Giroud earlier this year. However, Chelsea FC had tied down the World-Cup-winning striker to a one-year contract extension extending his stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Nerazzurri are on the hunt for a new forward to supplement the attacking options at Antonio Conte’s disposal next season. Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez are the current first-choice strikers for the Italian side. However, Martinez’s future with Inter is in doubt with FC Barcelona very interested in signing the young Argentine striker this summer.

However, Conte feels that adding a player of Giroud’s caliber could be a huge boost for Inter’s title challenge next season. The French international’s ariel ability and positioning is widely hailed by football pundits worldwide.

Inter Milan’s interest in Giroud in the January transfer window had ended abruptly with the Serie A side prioritizing signing Christian Eriksen from Tottenham Hotspurs at that time. With Eriksen having been signed since then, and with the Dane becoming an important part of Conte’s side, Giroud is back as a major target for the Nerazzurri.

Giroud has had a season of mixed fortunes while at Chelsea FC this year. Blues coach Frank Lampard has regularly rotated both Giroud and Tammy Abraham as Chelsea FC’s first-choice strikers.

The 33-year old French international has, however, struggled for consistent playing opportunities this season under Lampard. Giroud has only made 13 appearances in the Premier League this season and has clocked 687 minutes on the pitch for the Blues.

In Chelsea FC’s recent game with Watford, Giroud had opened the scoring for his side in a 3-0 win for the Blues. The goal was Giroud’s fourth in his last seven Premier League games. The 33-year old certainly has a lot to offer to any team whenever he plays despite his growing age.

The arrival of Timo Werner at Chelsea FC will further decrease the playing minutes awarded to Giroud by Lampard. It certainly seems as if the Frenchman would be open to the idea of moving to Italy to play for the Nerazzurri if Inter Milan makes an approach for him in the coming weeks.
