Inter great Marco Materazzi says Romelu Lukaku can not excel in the Premier League

Inter great Marco Materazzi has said that Chelsea’s summer recruit Romelu Lukaku can not excel in the Premier League unlike the former Manchester City man Edin Dzeko.

Lukaku made his return to England’s top flight in this summer’s transfer window in what was a mega-money deal with Chelsea snapping up their former player to add some much-needed firepower in the attacking department.

The Belgium international, who got himself off to a great start in front of the goal, has struggled off late and has invited criticism from many pundits, including the ex-Inter Milan forward Antonio Cassano.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has asserted his faith in Lukaku’s ability with the German backing his summer signing to return to his best form before the forward was in for an injury setback during the midweek game against Malmo.

World Cup-winning defender Marco Materazzi has joined the list of Lukaku’s critics with the former voicing concerns while speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport over Lukaku’s form in the Premier League by drawing comparisons to Edin Dzeko who was a sensation for Manchester City and is now a formidable force in the Serie A with AS Roma.

“Romelu is a phenomenon, but only in the Italian league.”

“Dzeko is a phenomenon with different characteristics but he remains so even if you put him in England or Spain.

“Then it is clear that at 35 you can’t take him to play on the counter attack. But when he started, in Wolfsburg he was a department alone.”
