How Chelsea FC Lined-Up for the 2020-2021 Premier League Campaign

Chelsea ensured their spot in the 2021-22 Champions League campaign despite a loss on the final day of league football across the past season to Aston Villa.

The Blues enjoyed a topsy turvy set of showings over the course of this Premier League campaign with Frank Lampard being given the axe in the early days of 2021 and former Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel taking over the managerial vacancy.

Under Tuchel the west Londoners had a solid start but a mixed run of results in the backend of the season meant that the Stamford Bridge giants had to settle for a fourth-place finish in the league standings despite a loss on final day of play for the west Londoners.

Here we will go through each game and line up which was took the field for Chelsea across the 2020-21 Premier League season-

Match 1 – Brighton v Chelsea (1-3) – 15th September 2020

The Blues ensured a comfortable three points whilst on the road in their debut fixture of the Premier League season with Frank Lampard’s men handing a 3-1 defeat to Brighton.

Reece James put out a solid display and even got a goal to cap off his man-of-the-match display at the Amex.

Match 2 – Chelsea v Liverpool (0-2) – 20th September 2020

The west London giants could not keep their momentum going after their opening day win over Brighton as the visiting Liverpool side took the win from the Stamford Bridge showdown.

Jurgen Klopp’s Merseysiders were ruthless on all fronts with the champions of England running out well-deserved victors in the capital city.

Match 3 – West Brom v Chelsea (3-1) – 26th September 2020

Chelsea were unable to return to winning ways in their next game despite coming up against the Premier League new boys in West Brom.

Lampard’s men were held to a high-octane 3-3 draw as West Brom forward Callum Robinson making life difficult for Thiago Silva in the Chelsea defence.


Match 4 – Chelsea v Crystal Palace (0-3) – 3rd October 2020

The Blues finally did manage a win in league action as they ran riot at the Bridge to hand a 4-0 thrashing to Crystal Palace.

Jorginho scored twice from the spot and new man Ben Chilwell netted his debut goal to lead their side to an easy win.

Match 5 – Chelsea v Southampton (3-3) – 17th October 2020

Another high-scoring stalemate was on the cards for Chelsea in what was a game that should have been won by the hosts at Stamford Bridge coming up against an impressive Saints outfit.

Southampton scored a stoppage-time leveller to make the game 3-3 despite new signing Timo Werner finding the back of the net twice inside the opening 30 minutes to give his side a healthy advantage.

Match 6 – Manchester United v Chelsea (0-0) – 24th August 2020

Chelsea’s visit to Old Trafford finished in a lacklustre goalless draw which increased the pressure on boss Frank Lampard’s shoulders as his players failed to pick up points when required.

Match 7 – Burnley v Chelsea (0-3) – 31st October 2020

The Blues got back to their best in style at Turf Moor with a fine attacking performance from Lampard’s under-fire men propelling the visitors to a 3-0 win over Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

Hakim Ziyech scored his first goal in the Chelsea shirt to notch up an impressive display in the final third of the pitch.

Match 8 – Chelsea  v Sheffield United(4-1) – 7th November 2020

It was another win on the run for Chelsea who triumphed 4-1 over relegation favourites Sheffield United at home turf in the early days of November.

Tammy Abraham scored on a rare start awarded to him by Frank Lampard as the Blues rallied from behind after Sheffield man McGoldrick had given his side the lead in the 9th minute.

Match 9 – Newcastle United v Chelsea (0-2) – 21st November 2020

It was not the easiest of outings for Chelsea at St James’ Park but nevertheless claimed the win through an own goal from Magpies defender Fernandez and a second-half strike from Tammy Abraham.’

Match 10 – Chelsea v Tottenham (0-0) – 29th November 2020

Yet another goalless draw coming up against fellow Champions League hopefuls was ensured for Chelsea when they welcomed city rivals Tottenham Hotspur to Stamford Bridge.

Match 11 – Chelsea v Leeds United (3-1) – 6th December 2020

The Premier League new boys Leeds United took a very early lead through former Chelsea man Patrick Bamford but the hosts bounced back and sealed a 3-1 win against the Elland Road outfit.

Olivier Giroud was handed the rarest of league starts and the Frenchman did not disappoint by netting the leveller to put his side back in the reckoning.

Match 12 – Everton v Chelsea (1-0) – 13th December 2020

Former Blues gaffer Carlo Ancelotti steered his Everton side to a memorable win at Goodison Park thanks to a 22nd-minute spot-kick from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The visitors spurned the chance to cause an upset on Merseyside as their form coming up against the upper-table sides continued to witness a downward spiral.

Match 13 – Wolves v Chelsea (2-1) – 15th December 2020

Chelsea were handed a second straight defeat once again on the road as Pedro Neto’s stoppage-time winner meant Wolves taking all three points from their own patch.

Giroud had handed his side a major advantage through his strike in the opening stages of the second-half but Wolves came from behind to stage a memorable win.

Match 14 – Chelsea v West Ham United (3-0) – 22nd December 2020

Pressure on Frank Lampard eased a bit with the west Londoners beating city foes West Ham United 3-0 after two defeats on the run in Premier League action.

Match 15 –Arsenal v Chelsea (3-1) – 26th December 2020

A third away defeat on the trot came at the Emirates Stadium for Chelsea with Arsenal securing a 3-1 win at the expense of their fellow Londoners.

Match 16 – Chelsea v Aston Villa (1-1) – 28th December 2020

The final game of 2020 for Chelsea finished in a stalemate as the in-form Aston Villa side made their travels to Stamford Bridge and secured an important point away from home.

Match 17 – Chelsea v Manchester City (1-3) – 3rd January 2021

Not the start Frank Lampard and Chelsea wanted to the new year with Manchester City coming to the Bridge and taking home the three points in emphatic fashion.

Match 18 – Fulham v Chelsea (0-1) – 16th January 2021

Chelsea returned to much-needed winning ways as they beat a 10-man Fulham outfit by the narrowest of margins at Craven Cottage.

Mason Mount scored the winner inside the closing 15 minutes to ensure Frank Lampard’s side finish the victors.

Match 19 –Leicester City v Chelsea (2-0) – 20th January 2021

The Foxes kept their top-four hopes in the reckoning with a 2-0 win over the Blues at the King Power Stadium with goals from Ndidi and James Maddison.

Match 20 – Chelsea v Wolves (0-0) – 27th  January 2021

Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge of the Blues finished in a goalless stalemate as Wolves were the visitors to Stamford Bridge.

The new Chelsea gaffer opted to start Olivier Giroud up top for the hosts with the likes of Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic on the bench.

Match 21 – Chelsea v Burnley (2-0) – 31st January 2021

Goals from Azpilicuetta and Marcos Alonso ensured Tuchel’s first win as the Chelsea manager with the Blues breaking their recent slump of form with a fine victory over Burnley.

Match 22 – Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea (0-1) – 5th February 2021

The Blues continued their unbeaten streak under Tuchel as they clinched a 1-0 win away at Spurs courtesy of a Jorginho strike from the spot in the opening stages of the London derby.

Match 23 – Sheffield United v Chelsea (1-2) – 8th February 2021

Another win on the west London giants with Tuchel on the touchline as they bounced back in style after Rudiger had put the ball in his own net to gift the Blades an equaliser with Jorginho once again scoring from the spot to maintain a perfect record under the new Chelsea boss.

Match 24 –Chelsea v Newcastle United (2-0) – 16th February 2021

Goals from Giroud and Werner gave the Blues another win on the run, this time at home turf, with Newcastle United the visitors to the Bridge.

Match 25 – Southampton v Chelsea (1-1) – 20th February 2021

Liverpool loanee Takumi Minamino gave Saints the lead around the half-hour mark but Mason Mount came clutch for Chelsea to find the leveller from the spot as Tuchel retained his unbeaten run as the Chelsea manager.

Match 26 – Chelsea v Manchester United (0-0) – 28th February 2021

The Blues just about kept their unbeaten run of form under Thomas Tuchel intact despite being in for a stern test in the form of a high-flying Manchester United side turning up at Stamford Bridge with the game finishing in a 0-0 affair.

Match 27 –Liverpool v Chelsea (0-1) – 5th March 2021

Mason Mount’s incredible strike at Anfield secured a pivotal win for Chelsea against a toothless Liverpool side that lacked their usual ferocity in front of the goal.

Match 28 – Chelsea v Everton (2-0) – 8th March 2021

Chelsea took revenge from the earlier defeat to Everton with Thomas Tuchel’s side running out hard-earned winners over the Goodison Park outfit.

Match 29 – Leeds United v Chelsea (0-o) – 13th March 2021

Leeds United held their ground to salvage a point from the game against Chelsea at Elland Road with Tuchel’s Blues unable to break down a tough-looking backline fielded by the hosts.

Match 30 – Chelsea v West Brom (2-5) – 3rd April 2021

Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten run in charge of Chelsea was brought to an end in the most shocking of manners as relegation favourites West Brom ran out 5-2 winners at Stamford Bridge.

The west Londoners had taken the lead through Pulisic but West Brom forwards Pereira and Robinson brought up braces to steer their side to an incredible three points.

Match 31 – Crystal Palace v Chelsea  (1-4) – 10th April 2021

The Blues returned to winning ways in a thumping manner at Selhurst Park with a brace from the in-form Christian Pulisic propelling the visitors to a 4-1 win over the Eagles.

Match 32 – Chelsea v Brighton (0-0) – 21st April 2021

Brighton put out a terrific defensive display at Stamford Bridge to hold Chelsea to a nil-nil draw and gain ground on the relegation battle at the foot of the Premier League table.

Match 33 – West Ham United v Chelsea (2-0) – 24th April 2021

Timo Werner scored the only goal of the much-hyped contest at the London Stadium with Chelsea sealing a pivotal 1-0 win to bolster their chances of  a top-four finish.

Match 34 – Chelsea v Fulham (2-0) – 1st May 2021

Kai Havertz scored on either side of the half-time break to secure a win for Thomas Tuchel and Co. over relegation candidates Fulham with the season now in its final leg.

Match 35 – Manchester City v Chelsea (1-2) – 8th May 2021

The Premier League runaway leaders were defeated at their own patch by Chelsea in what as a truly enthrailling affair which was sealed only through Marcos Alonso’s stoppage-time winner.

Match 36 – Chelsea v Arsenal (0-1) – 13th May 2021

The Blues lost major footing in the race for the top-four with Arsenal clinching a goal through Jorginho’s misfortunes and claim the win at Stamford Bridge against their arch-rivals.

Match 37 – Chelsea v Leicester City (2-1) – 19th May 2021

Chelsea got back into action with a much-needed win over fellow top-four hopefuls Leicester City just days after the latter had emerged victorious in the FA Cup final played at Wembley.

Match 38 – Ast0n Villa v Chelsea (2-1) – 23rd May 2021

It was not the ending Chelsea had hoped for to their league campaign as they came out second best to Aston Villa on the final day of the 2020-21 Premier League calendar but still ensured their Champions League status with Leicester City losing to Spurs.
