How can Graham Potter bolster his squad in the January transfer window?

Chelsea’s recent run of form has not gone unnoticed and the new man in the top job, Graham Potter, has some tough decisions to make when the transfer window reopens for business come January.

Potter’s men were outclassed by local rivals Arsenal in last weekend’s derby defeat at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea’s front line failing to inspire yet again as the likes of Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, both of whom arrived last summer, unable to get firing in front of the goal. The Chelsea boss would be urged to bring in some much-needed reinforcements to add to his ranks with injuries and lack of consistency in results hampering his otherwise great start to life in west London.

Aubameyang has scored just once in his six top flight outings so far this season and it is certainly now or never that Potter starts his search in the transfer market for the viable No.9 to provide the impetus for his side in the attacking third of the pitch.

Juventus frontman Dusan Vlahovic appears to be a long-term option for the Blues should he make the move to the Bridge but with the competition to land the highly-rated Serbian heating up of late with Manchester United credited with a strong interest in his services, Chelsea would be keen to win fight against their Premier League rivals on the transfer front.

With most of the Chelsea first-team players heading to the World Cup in Qatar, the club game will be on a break for six weeks which gives Potter and his backroom staff ample time to scout for names who can prove to be the difference makers for an under-fire Chelsea side.

The midfield roster has been dealt with injury blows too with the anchorman N’Golo Kante, despite his recent struggles in terms of form, on the sidelines until after the World Cup with a hamstring injury while the uncertainty that looms over the future of Jorginho failing to subside as the Italian enters the final six months of his current terms with the club.

A player of Declan Rice’s ability is what is required by Potter to shore up his engine room options rather than depend upon the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and the young Conor Gallagher to slot in the midfield berths week in and week out and with Rice said to be keen on a return to the Chelsea fold, Potter could do with the West Ham maestro Rice to emerge as the general in the heart of the midfield three.

At the back, in spite of big spending in the summer window to sign Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella, Chelsea’s defence have largely relied on the 36-year-old Brazilian in Thiago Silva which makes for the case that Potter should sign another quality centre-back and line him up as a potential successor for the former.

World Cup events have proven to be the perfect shop when it comes to transfers for some of the biggest clubs across the continent and the Qatar mega event which starts later his month should be no different which should sound out hints to Chelsea and Graham Potter that their squad needs rebuilding with big-name signings.
