Liverpool icon Graeme Souness has lambasted Chelsea’s business in the transfer market under the club’s new co-owner Todd Boehly.
The American businessman took over the Blues’ reigns in 2022 and his arrival in the Stamford Bridge fold led to massive spending in the summer transfer window with Chelsea forking out nearly £200 million on new signings.
Souness, however, has appeared far from satisfied with the dealings overseen by Boehly as the former, while speaking to Sky Sports ( via The Sun), saying that Chelsea are in need of reinforcements to bolster their underwhelming front line.
“No he’s [Havertz] not going to get enough goals.
“It is madness to sell Timo Werner, [Romelu] Lukaku and then spend £170m on three defenders.
“Surely you must think, football has never changed. The hardest thing to find is goalscorers.
“Spending £170m on defenders, if you can afford it go out and do it, but the priority for me is you have sold two strikers, they weren’t the answer not long term or short term, but were better than what they have got right now.
“You can’t tell me they are better off with the firepower they have got now.”
Chelsea parted ways with both Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku last summer and brought in Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but the forward pairing have failed to impress with their displays in front of the goal.
There is hope that Graham Potter, who is new in the Chelsea dugout, will be on the lookout for a viable number nine to add to his squad in the January transfer window which is now open until the end of the month.
