Didier Deschamps has urged Olivier Giroud to leave Chelsea if he is to cement a spot in France’s Euro 2020 squad.
The 33-year-old, who has 97 caps for his country and 39 goals have been a regular fixture upfront for France in recent international tournaments and started up-front in every game except the tournament opener as Deschamps guided France to World Cup glory in 2018. Deschamps has continued to pick Giroud in the squad despite his lack of action for Chelsea.
Giroud has played just seven times in all competitions for the Blues this season with Frank Lampard favoring Tammy Abraham to feature as the focal point to the attack with Michy Batshuayi acting as his deputy.
Deschamps has now urged Giroud to reconsider his Chelsea future.
‘Giroud, like others, may have to move,’ Deschamps said. ‘His situation at Chelsea hasn’t changed in two months.
‘It would be better for him, of course, to go to a club where he would get more playing time. If he can’t get it at Chelsea, the idea is to get it elsewhere
It’s his decision. I don’t know what offers he has, where it might be possible for him to get more playing time.
‘We saw each other not so long ago. As with every player, he’s the one who decides. But keep in mind that it’s the daily life of players with their clubs that leads to France selection. He knows it. It’s up to him to decide the best solution for himself.’
Conte, who managed Giroud during his two-year spell in west London is now in pole position to land the Frenchman but with Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez, the main two strikers at Inter Milan Giroud would have to be satisfied with a substitute role at Inter.
