Chelsea FC boss Frank Lampard has urged striker Tammy Abraham to focus on his playing form rather than over a new contract. The English forward has not been on his best form lately, after having impressed in the first half of the season.
Abraham has lost his place in the starting lineup to French international Olivier Giroud in recent games. Although Lampard has chosen to rotate the squad on a regular basis, Abraham has got much fewer opportunities as compared to before. Moreover, when given the chance to shine, the 22-year old has been unable to get on the scoresheet.
Meanwhile, Giroud has been scoring goals in a regular fashion when the World-Cup winning striker has been given a start by Frank Lampard. The 33-year old Frenchman has scored four goals in his last seven Premier League gamesand has linked up well with Christian Pulisic and Willian as the front three for the Blues.
The 22-year old Abraham had enjoyed a wonderful start to the 2019-20 Premier League campaign. He scored 12 goals for the Blues until the end of 2019 and was a great performer for Frank Lampard’s side.
However, Abraham’s form soon fizzled out since the start of 2020 and led to him losing his spot in Chelsea FC’s starting lineup. The English international scored his last goal for the Blues on 11th January, having been on a barren run since then.
Lampard expressed his opinion on Abraham’s contractual negotiations, with the Blues coach stating that a new contract should not be on the player’s mind. He also added that he believes Abraham should focus on how he can contribute to the team’s performance.
The Chelsea FC manager claimed that the 22-year old English striker has been great throughout the 2019-20 season for the Blues. Lampard did admit that Abraham has not had the most productive of displays in the second half of the Premier League campaign. However, according to Lampard, a young player like Abraham could change his fortunes by training harder.
Abraham’s current deal with Chelsea FC runs until 2022. The player is yet to agree upon a new contract that would extend his stay at Stamford Bridge for the coming years.
