Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has praised Jorginho for never hiding despite receiving criticism during his first season at Stamford Bridge under Maurizio Sarri.
Jorginho joined Chelsea for a reported £50million from Napoli last summer, following the Italian mastermind into the Premier League club. And although Jorginho faced criticism in his first campaign with the West Londoners, he is beginning to win over Chelsea fans, who sang his name during a 3-2 win over Norwich City last week at Carrow Road.
Lampard lauded the 27-year-old Italian for continuing to step up for Chelsea despite criticism and turn the tide.
While speaking to reporters, the 41 year old former England midfielder praised the defensive midfielder for not being shy after the criticism from the fans and rather stepping up to contribute for the team, “From watching Chelsea closely last year, I thought he finished the season brilliantly, “If you’re going through a tough time with the fans, it is really easy to hide, but he never hid from receiving the ball on the edge of his own box or a tight area. That’s a sign of character – you need to believe in yourself, stand up and play. That’s what he does. When Jorginho goes on the pitch he wants to win and contribute.”
Jorginho has started all of Chelsea’s games so far this season and Lampard went on to wax lyrical on his midfield gem, “He’s been a pleasure to work with. Fans are generally pretty honest. What they’re seeing is a player – I don’t want to talk about last year – who has a drive and determination as a team player. He also has quality. He can change a game, lead a game, own a game from midfield areas,”
