Former Blues manager Antonio Conte has revealed that current Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is capable of becoming “one of the best managers in the world”.
Chelsea turned to a former player to take the reins for the 2019-20 campaign after seeing Italian head coach Maurizio Sarri return to his native to join Serie A giants Juventus in the process.
Another Italian coach had succeeded another at Chelsea prior to Sarri taking up the managerial role year prior to that change. In that process, Antonio Conte was the man who was shown the exit door.
Currently, in charge of Inter Milan, the 50-year-old Conte explained that his stint at Stamford Bridge ended sourly but hopes that Lampard could have a much more fruitful spell at a place that he has been well-acquainted.
Over his two years in charge of Chelsea, Conte won the Premier League title and FA Cup helping the Premier League side rediscovering a spark. A spark that had been lost during Jose Mourinho’s second stint with the Premier League club but his successor Conte lit the torch and guided Chelsea through a successful two terms.
Although fresh into his first season as manager of Chelsea, Lampard has the daunting task of keeping the Blues in contention for major honours as well as qualifying for the Champions League next season. When Lampard took charge of Chelsea in the summer, the club was charged slammed with a transfer ban but that ban was lifted in January.
While speaking to Sky Sports, Conte revealed that Lampard has the potential to become a great coach in the future, despite being relatively new to management, “I think he is doing a really good job, Frank. This is his second experience after Derby County so to be the coach of a top team is not easy. I think he has the skills and ability to become one of the best managers in the world. He has to continue to work in this way and I wish him the best for the future.”
