France coach, Didier Deschamps is of the opinion that Chelsea striker, Olivier Giroud may need to leave Chelsea in the January transfer window. Giroud started from the bench as Manchester United striker, Anthony Martial started against Portugal for the French team on Saturday evening’s UEFA Nations League match.
France although sealed their place in the Nations League final as they beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 1-0 but Deschamps was concerned with the way Martial missed golden opportunities. He brought in Giroud in place of Martial with 12 minutes remaining from the final whistle to blow off.
The veteran striker, who is now 34, seems to have an uncertain future in Stamford Bridge after not achieving to get enough minutes under Lampard.
France coach Didier Deschamps has warned Olivier Giroud to consider taking a move away from Chelsea. Deschamps is very upset to see his main striker struggling to get game time this season and this has affected his team selection.
“The situation in the club has to impact him. He needs rhythm. It’s hard but that’s not why I want to lose him,” said Deschamps as per Metro news.
“We talk, he has every interest in it not lasting for him. We must not forget what he did with us.
“Olivier, I know him. He is going through a difficult period both physically and psychologically. He’s a big build, having a shorter playing time doesn’t do him a favour.
“If his situation drags on, he knows very well what I think he needs to do so that he remains competitive.”
The France international has fallen down the pecking order with the likes of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham getting regular game time despite ending the season with a stellar performance. He scored seven goals when football resumed after the COVID break in the previous season.
The Italian club, Inter Milan was rumoured to be keen to bring him in this summer transfer window but instead, Giroud signed a one-year contract with the club.
The current season saw him getting just 33 minutes in the Premier League games in total and if this goes on, playing in the upcoming Euros will be impossible for him.
