Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has slammed his old club’s decision to part ways with midfielder Jorginho in the January transfer window.
The long serving Blues maestro Jorginho signed for the Premier League table toppers Arsenal on deadline day in a deal which set the stage for Chelsea’s recruitment of Argentine talent Enzo Fernandez in a British transfer record.
With Chelsea’s woeful run of form failing to ebb after yet another defeat in league action, this time to basement side Southampton on home turf, Leboeuf was critical in his assessment, while speaking to ESPN, of Jorginho’s move to Arsenal which has left Chelsea an influential presence short in the squad.
“I don’t see any players with leadership. They’re all 20-21 years old, they have great futures.
“We saw that today with Jorginho and Arsenal. It’s crazy that I have to say that Jorginho was very useless for Chelsea but so useful for Arsenal.
“We have to find leaders in the middle of the park or in the spine, which we don’t have at Chelsea. Nobody is a leader.”
Jorginho was out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer and despite the Blues board keen to open talks with the Italy international over a new deal, it was understood that the former Napoli man wanted to move on.
A move to Arsenal, however, and that too in the final hours of the January window, came as a surprise to many, considering Chelsea sitting mid table and in danger of missing out on Champions League football next season.
