Five players whose performance will determine Chelsea’s success this season

Almost every club has proceeded with caution in this 2020 summer transfer window due to the financial strain resulted from the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide. However, this has been unlikely in Chelsea’s case as the Premier League giants spend a hefty amount of cash in the transfer window to overhaul their squad.

Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich backed coach, Frank Lampard to majorly overhaul his side as he promised to deliver at Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea legend, Lampard inspired his team to secure the Champions League qualification as a debutant manager even with the protocols of a transfer ban. As a result, many interesting talented prospects were signed in this window to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in the title race.

Some of these new faces are still getting accustomed to their new leagues while some have started to produce good performances for the Blues. Let’s see the five players of Chelsea whose performances will greatly determine the success of the 2020-21 campaign.

#5 Ben Chilwell

Chelsea had been searching for a proper left-back since the past season as this was the position the Blues lacked someone with high caliber. Ben Chilwell from Leicester City was such a player as he was a part of the famous League win of Leicester and proved time and time again that he is a world-class fullback. There was no surprise when Lampard proposed a move worth £45 million to land in the Englishman.

The left-back has hit the ground running pretty well with back to back impressive displays at the west London club. He has already given massive performances since his debut and his continuity in the left flank will be crucial for Chelsea this season.

The England international player was highly influential to break the deadlock against Crystal Palace where he netted a goal and completed an assist in what turned out to be a man-of-the-match performance. Undoubtedly, Lampard will be asking for more similar performances from him.

#4 Timo Werner

Chelsea purchased Timo Werner from the Bundesliga club, RB Leipzig which saw a deal of €52.6 million in this transfer window in summer. It is too early to comment or make a judgment on how it has worked until now but he has shown signs that he is a goalscoring machine with a tremendous hunger for goals.

The German striker has produced a few impressive displays in this campaign but hasn’t been consistent in front of the goal. Until now he has featured in six matches where he has scored two goals and one assist.

The Chelsea fans are hoping that the German International finds his form soon enough that he has shown in the German League as that will only benefit Chelsea in the long run. On his day, he can destroy any defence but that will need him to settle in the new atmosphere and new club first.

#3 Edouard Mendy

This Senegalese keeper was brought to give competition to the struggling Spanish keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga which saw a move from French club, Rennes this summer. His debut performance was quite good but as matches went by, he has gradually improved more and more. He has been spectacular in place of the error-prone Kepa and gave back to back stunning performances against Manchester United and Sevilla last week.

To top that, he hasn’t yet conceded a goal till now in four matches for Chelsea and became Man of the match against Manchester United. His performance will be decisive for the Blues this season and if he shows consistency, the long problem of the keeper will be resolved in his presence.

#2 Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva is currently one of the best centre-backs in the footballing world and there is no doubt in that. He joined the Blues this summer after his contract expired with PSG.

Silva was undoubtedly the best player for Paris throughout the season and Chelsea is aware of the positivities and qualities the 36-year old will bring to Stamford Bridge.

His experience will be a major boost in the Chelsea backline. He led his team, PSG, and inspired them to reach the Champions League final last season with his trying of magnificent displays in defence.

The experience of the Brazilian defender in crucial European matches should help not only the team as a whole but also the young defenders of the club, who could consider him as their mentor following his arrival at th club this summer from PSG.

#1 Christian Pulisic

This American winger was Chelsea’s standout performer for the later stages of the previous season since football resumed after the COVID break as he netted four goals and completed four assists in that period. He was a threat down the left flank for the opposition and tore down defences of big clubs like Liverpool and Manchester City single-handedly. His agility and technique to beat defenders played a crucial role for Chelsea to secure the UCL this season.

So far this season, Pulisic has played out of position, and as a result, his productivity has been decreased quite a lot. Coach Lampard is trying to figure out an ideal combination to put all three attacking stars including Pulisic at the Chelsea upfront. He is the most important player of this team as you can see from the No.10 shirt he wears. His last season’s form will be huge for Chelsea to win major trophies.
