Former Chelsea player and assistant coach Eddie Newton has lavished praise on Mason Mount for his style of play and compared the England international to one of Premier League’s biggest talents in Kevin de Bruyne.
Mount has enjoyed a steller 2020-21 campaign with the Blues and has impressed under both Frank Lampard and his successor to the Chelsea top job Thomas Tuchel with the 22-year-old playmaker six goals and five assists in his league outings this season.
Speaking to The Atheltic, Newton claims that Mount has a driven attitude with the ex-Blues first-teamer adding that the Chelsea man had made the most of his talent by exhibiting the right kind of mentality whilst on the pitch.
“You know who reminds me of De Bruyne? Mount.”
“He’s not as blunt as him but Mount has this steely belief in himself.
“He is a driven young man. He goes about things in a slightly different way. He smiles and everyone thinks he’s just a lovely kid, but that guy has an edge to him when he needs it. He couldn’t get to this level if he didn’t.”
“I knew this kid had a future.”
. “What a lot of people don’t understand is that having talent is one thing, but if you don’t have the mentality and drive, it can only take you so far.”
Mount’s showings over the course of this season have not gone unnoticed with him being rewarded with the Chelsea Player of the Year for the 2020-21 season ahead of the likes of new Stamford Bridge arrivals Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.
He has also gotten the nod for Gareth Southgate’s 30-man provisional squad for this summer’s UEFA Euros where Mount is tipped to be an integral part of the England setup.
