Chelsea FC have been alerted to the availability of Bayern Munich star David Alaba this summer. The versatile Austrian international is yet to make a decision regarding his future at the Bundesliga club, despite his current deal expiring in less than 12 months.
Speculation persists about Alaba wanting to leave the German giants this summer for an opportunity to play elsewhere. It is rumored that the Premier League remains the preferred destination for the 28-year old, despite interest from a few La Liga sides in singing him.
The Blues are on the hunt for additional defensive reinforcements this summer to glue together a woeful backline. Chelsea FC’s defensive errors have been lambasted by many former players and pundits. The situation has left Frank Lampard with no other option than to dip into the transfer market.
Alaba is capable of playing in both the center-back and wingback positions with ease. The 28-year old played in the left-back spot for Bayern Munich in his initial years at the German club. However, with the rise of Alphonso Davies, Alaba has shifted to the center-back spot in Hansi Flick’s side.
In the hope of not losing out on Alaba for free next summer, Bayern Munich have become increasingly likely to sanction the Austrian international’s sale this summer. Reports indicate the Bundesliga champions’ desire of a £30 million being tabled for their star defender.
Alaba is rumored to be holding out for greater wage demands at Bayern Munich. The German club’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had commented upon the player’s current situation, stating that it was up to Alaba himself to decide his future at the Allianz Arena. However, Rummenigge had suggested that Alaba’s agents were dragging on the contract negotiations in the hope of greater monetary expectations.
If Chelsea FC are successful in securing Alaba’s transfer, he would become the club’s second signing from the Bundesliga after former RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner. The 24-year old forward signed for the Blues last month in a fee amounting to €53 million.
