Facing an unlikely prospect of staging a miraculous comeback against Bayern Munich, Frank Lampard’s side face a tricky fixture at the Allianz Arena. Chelsea FC trail the Germany giants by three goals, having been on the receiving end of a brace by Serge Gnabry and a Robert Lewandowski effort when the two sides had met in the first leg of the Round of 16 fixture back in February.
Coming on the back of a rather upsetting loss to city rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup final last weekend, the Blues could potentially be playing their last game of Lampard’s debut season as the Chelsea FC boss when they take the pitch shortly.
The lineup fielded by Lampard suggests that the Blues coach harbors ambitions of his side being on their best form against Hansi Flick’s men. However, a surprising absence in the Chelsea FC starting 11 is that of in-form Frenchman Olivier Giroud. The 33-year old who has been in fantastic form for the Blues in front of goal of late has been benched in favor of Tammy Abraham.
Perhaps Lampard will be counting upon the more agile and rapid style of play possessed by the 22-year old English striker to pile attacks upon the Bayern defense. However, the return of N’Golo Kante to the Blues midfield after a significant period of time on the sidelines would be a major boost for the visitors.
A four-man backline has been chosen by Lampard for the upcoming game, with Reece James deputizing for the injured Chelsea FC skipper César Azpilicueta. Italian full-back Emerson comes in for the suspended Marcos Alonso on the left side of the defense for the Blues.
