Chelsea lost 3-1 to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge where U.S star, Christian Pulisic was unable to save his team like what he did in the previous season when they faced Pep Guardiola. The American winger talked about what went wrong for Chelsea after they were handed their third defeat in their last six games.
The Blues conceded three goals in quick succession in the first half itself with Ilkay Gundogan opening the scoresheet for Man City with his superb strike from just outside the box. Teh star of the match, Kevin De Bruyne scored and assisted Phi Foden for another two goals to give Chelsea a mountain to climb to overcome the scoreline in the second half.
Although Chelsea crumbled to City’s pressure in the first half, they reacted quite well in the second half as they managed to nullify the threats of the opposition attack and even scored a late consolation goal as well.
Callum Hudson Odoi was the scorer who came in place of Werner. He struck a low cross from Kai Havertz, who came in as well in the second half. Pulisic pointed out the dull performances of the first half in each match which is letting the team down.
‘We conceded goals with a lot of counter situations and we weren’t prepared to stop that so the first half really let us down,’ said the American as per the Official Chelsea Website.
‘They were able to beat us on some transitions where we needed to defend better and be a little smarter and then we allowed them to dictate the tempo of the game.’
‘We had to go back out and show character,’ Pulisic explained. ‘We’re never going to give up, we know we have talented guys and a good team but we just need to show it, which is what we did in the second half. It’s not easy to come back from three goals down but it’s happened before so we gave it everything and managed to get one back. Unfortunately, it was just too little, too late.’
‘We’re in a tough period,’ he added. ‘It’s going to happen to everyone at times and we’ve been in these situations ourselves before. We have a game next week where we need to start turning it around because we do need to start getting results quickly.
‘We’ll watch this game back, look at it as a team and see what we can improve on. It’s not going to be easy but we need to show character now. We have some games coming up where we need to turn it around quickly and start putting together a run of results.’
He agreed to what manager Frank Lampard said in the post-match interview about keeping hopes high and move on for the next challenge. It has been a rough few games for the Blues and if they don’t turn the situation around, The coach’s job will be in jeopardy as well and the players know it. To make matters much worse, they can even go down to the bottom half of the Premier League table too.
