Chelsea’s veteran striker, Olivier Giroud’s four goals put Chelsea at the top of Group E ahead of Sevilla on Wednesday with a 4-0 scoreline. The striker scored all the goals for his team in his record-breaking night which makes him the oldest player to score a hattrick in the UCL.
The France striker puts his name in football history just over two months since his 34th birthday after coach, Frank Lampard gave him a rare opportunity to start against Sevilla.
A beautiful build-up from Kai Havertz allowed Giroud to open the scoresheet for the Blues in just 18 minutes of the game. Midfield duo Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho’s intense press helped to take the ball and from that, Giroud chipped a clean shot to score his second goal.
The record was created when Giroud met N’golo Kante’s cross and put the match into bed in the 75th minute. A cherry on the top of the cake came when Giroud was fouled in the box and he calmly converted from the penalty around the 84th minute.
Although the French striker became the oldest to bag a hat-trick in the UCL, Ferenc Puskas did score three goals in the European Cup when he was 38 years of age in 1965 as per ESPN reports.
The hattrick means, he is the second French international to score two UCL hattrick alongside Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. Chelsea’s current coach, Frank Lampard was the last one to net four goals in a single UCL game for the Blues 10 years ago against Aston Villa.
