The 18-year-old has played the whole 90 minutes seven times out of 10 while has been unavailable for one game only throughout the whole month. Andy Meyer’s Chelsea finished the month of December at the summit of the Premier League 2 table as Man United, Leicester and Tottenham all went empty-handed.
Bate has been the captain of the youth squad in the FA Cup in the previous year and played three matches in the PL2 title-winning season. This was enough of an opportunity to show his calibre and break into the team to become a regular starter and now he has shown again by winning the individual trophy.
Apart from Lewis Bate, Chelsea’s Tino Anjorin was also nominated for the player of the month of December for his brilliant performance in the middle of the pitch.
‘I was shocked when I found out just because of the level of competition there was among the nominations. To beat those players to the award is a special feeling and I know there have been great players to have won it in the past. I’m over the moon.’ Bate told the official Chelsea website.
‘There were some players from Chelsea who were left out of the nominations which I was quite shocked about. Tino Livramento, Myles Peart-Harris and Marcel Lewis all deserve a mention.’
Premier League Football Development panel chose the winner of the month taking into consideration, the nominations of all the club managers of the PL2 that judged the best performances in each game by opposing players.
