Billy Gilmour’s influential midfield performance for Scotland against England in the group stage fixture at the Euros has earned the Chelsea youngster some well-earned plaudits from his manager Steve Clarke.
Scotland held Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions to a goalless stalemate which meant that England were unable to cement their spot in the Last-16 of the competition in what was truly an under-fire showing from Harry Kane and Co.
Meanwhile, Scotland put out a tremendous shift on the pitch and Gilmour was singled out for praise by Clarke in his post-game remarks for the young midfielder stepping up when required and showing his talents out on the big stage.
“Stephen O’Donnell was exceptional, and Billy was just behind him. It was nice for him to get that start, a big platform, a big player, Billy.
“I’ve said for a long time he’ll be a big part of the future of Scottish football. We know what we’ve got in the camp, we’ll try to manage that and keep a lid on things. Performances like that will do him no harm whatsoever.
It was a first international start for the Blues first-teamer who had been on the receiving end of injury niggles this past season which curtailed his minutes on the pitch for the eventual Champions of Europe.
