Chelsea have finally sacked Frank Lampard as the head coach of the club earlier today with Thomas Tuchel lurking to take Lampard’s place. In such a crunch period in the Premier League, the sacking can be seen as a change in playing style for the London club. It has also been reported that Tuchel might be in-charge of Chelsea for as soon as the Wolves game, the club has next in the Premier League.
Thomas Tuchel is a German himself and has spent most of his managerial career in the German Bundesliga before moving to manage PSG. He is an attack-minded coach and it will be expected of him to use the attacking threat in the Chelsea squad. It will be interesting to predict how Tuchel might set his first-ever Chelsea side if he officially gets the job before Wednesday.
Now we take a look at how Chelsea might lineup against Wolves in the Premier League fixture, where Tuchel might be in command of Chelsea for the first time.
THE 4-2-3-1
Having analyzed the managerial career of Thomas Tuchel, he has most likely used the 4-2-3-1 formation in all his teams. Chelsea have earlier used a 4-2-3-1 under Lampard and this is arguably the strongest Chelsea side as well with Pulisic, Werner, Havertz and Ziyech all in the starting XI. The summer signings haven’t clicked together so far this season, but Tuchel might just be the perfect person to get them going and get the season back on track.
The midfield pivot should be made of Kante and Kovacic which should give a good platform for the Londoners. Most importantly, they will also allow the full-backs of Chelsea to participate in the attack rather than just putting crosses into the box. Kai Havertz has barely got into his stride at Chelsea and in the No.10 position, he will be expected to thrive because of his technical ability.
Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic will as always be under heavy scrutiny and they will need to come good in front of the goal. Silva and Zouma will be expected to be the centre-back pairing as Zouma has been rested for the last couple of Premier League games.
THE 4-3-3
Thomas Tuchel has also used the 4-3-3 at Borussia Dortmund and PSG which makes this system also a possibility against Wolves in the Premier League fixture. Kante’s presence or absence will be key for Chelsea’s success in the game as no other midfielder is as capable as Kante defensively in the squad. Jorginho or Billy Gilmour might also be played in the defensive midfield role if Kante hasn’t been fit.
Edouard Mendy has been doubtful in the last couple of months and needs to up his game like he did when he joined the club. Mason Mount has been Chelsea’s liveliest player in the recent past and should start if Chelsea play with a three-man midfield. But Chelsea should win the game against the Wolves hands down despite all the trouble because Wolves have been toothless without Raul Jimenez.
