Chelsea are ready to play a London derby in the Premier League this weekend as the Stamford Bridge hosts Mourinho’s Tottenham. Chelsea and Tottenham have both been arguably the best teams in the Premier League this season and thus it is sure to be an enthralling game. Both the sides have varying styles of play even though Lampard has been a student of Mourinho, who has a rich managerial history with the Blues of Chelsea.
The inclusion of Christian Pulisic in the matchday squad is very likely as he trained with the rest of the squad this week. But Pulisic and Havertz are very unlikely to be featuring in the starting XI as they still aren’t match fit yet. Thus it might be predictable as how Chelsea will lineup in the game tomorrow.
Let us now have a look at how Frank Lampard might set his side up in the London derby against Tottenham.
THE 4-3-3
This 4-3-3 has recently become Lampard’s go-to system and this lineup has lately become his favourite with Kante returning to his best form. Alongside Kante, Kovacic and Mount have done extremely well in the midfield as the Frenchman gives the other midfielders the freedom to create play. The defence also very much picks itself with Eduard Mendy coming like a breath of fresh air to the Chelsea side.
Thiago Silva and Zouma have turned the Chelsea defence from one of the poor ones in the Premier League to one of the best in the league. Chilwell has also done well going forward as he has chipped in with goals and assists for the Blues of Chelsea. The main concern for Lampard will be the goal drought of Werner, as the German international hasn’t looked good in front of goal.
Ziyech, as expected has started to spread his magic as his balls have created havoc in the opposition defence.
THE 4-2-3-1
The 4-2-3-1 formation is very similar to the 4-3-3 but it allows the likes of Chilwell and Reece James more opportunities to bomb forward and join in the attack. The double-pivot of Kante and Kovacic has done well in the past and will be expected to screen the defence. Werner and Ziyech will be expected to drift inside whereas Chilwell and James will provide the necessary width.
Tammy Abraham has been good in front of goal but has also missed several chances for Chelsea. Frank Lampard might also be tempted to play Olivier Giroud, as he was their saviour against Rennes and won the game for the Blues. The Frenchman has been great for Chelsea whenever he has played but Lampard just doesn’t prefer him over Tammy Abraham.
THE 3-4-3
The 3-4-3 is another system Lampard has used at Chelsea with the three defenders at the back being Silva, Zouma and Cesar Azpilicueta. All the defenders are solid and give James and Chilwell to join the attack and create overlapping runs for the wingers. Though it is a big game and the likes of Kane and Son have been very good scoring and making goals, it will be a slight possibility for Lampard to go with this system.
