UEFA has disclosed that the face-off between Chelsea and Sevilla in the Champions League group stage match will be the first to feature a remote VAR established at their headquarters in Nyon.
Until now, the utilization of VAR in European competition has been through ‘onsite solutions’, but following victorious trials by the supervising body, Nyon will be the base for VAR.
The game of Chelsea against Sevilla in Spain will be the first official use of the remote VAR, though there will be a backup procedure at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in circumstance of a technical matter.
“The referee on the pitch will be assisted from the VAR Operation Room in Nyon, Switzerland,” UEFA said in a statement as per the Mirror.
“UEFA has now successfully tested and approved a VAR remote technical solution… and will be implemented for the first time in an official capacity for the Champions League group stage encounter between Sevilla and Chelsea.”
Both the teams are in the need of only one point to assure the qualification for the knockout stages of the tournament and the clash on Wednesday will play a major role in determining who will finish in the top Group E, thus ensuring a top seed for the stages of knock out.
Since the preface of Video Assistant Referees (VAR), most of the domestic leagues across Europe have been governing the system from the remote centres away from the stadiums.
UEFA has now successfully analyzed and approved a VAR remote technical solution, which is established at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon.
